Our History PRE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ASSOCIATION

On 7th of February 2019 TPL Lekwa Ezutah FNITP, Past President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), constituted a Coordinating Committee on Women in Planning with the following Terms of Reference (ToR):

  1. Encouraging female members to effectively participate in the activities of the Institute;
  2. Mobilize women for continuous education;
  3. To commerce the tutelage establishment of the Association in Year 2019.

 

The Coordinating Team members are :

The Coordinating Committee carried  out the following activities:

  1. Establishment of AWTPN State Chapters- Eighteen 18 State Chapters were successfully    established with their Executive members
  2. Conferences and AGM- The Committee participated in the 2020 and 2021- –Organised meetings for members of the Association of Women Town Planners. Engaged in publicity using fliers, banners, posters etc Promoted the Association through customized T- Shirts and Scarves for the women. Coordinated the activities of Women Town Planners during the Conferences. Established a 7member  Electoral Committee. Conducted a very fair and free  election for the first set  of Excutive Committee members October 2021
  3. Preparation of Provisional Bye- Laws;This was used to establish AWTPN Interim Executives after consideration and approval by the National Council  NITP
  4. Organised virtual meetings before the 2021 NITP Conference /AGM held in Port Harcourt ,2021
  5. In charge of promotional activities for the Association;
  6. Coordination of election for the Association;
  7. Other activities.

In Year 2020, the existence of the Association was recognized as a body in the Constitution of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) Section 20.1 (c) with Functions as follows:

  1. To have rules and regulations for her smooth and efficient operations.
  2. Conduct the affairs of its members in ways and manner as to achieve the Aim and Objectives of the Institute.
  3. Send to Council report of its activities at least twice a year.
  4. Send regularly its programs and reports to the Chapter Executive Committee in States where they are in existence as well as to its National Body

THE ESTABLISHMENT AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL

The National body of the Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria (AWTPN) was formally stablished on 27th October 2021 with(into) elective positions by the Members of the Association during the Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt. During the election two Past Presidents  with the First National Vice President were appointed as External Observers and were charged with the responsibility of monitoring  the first female.election in  NITP. The Chairman of the team  was Late PP Tpl Olubunmi Ajayi fnitp .At the end of the elections the following women were  successful:

  1. Tpl Mrs Risikat Bukola Bello fnitp – National Chairman
  2. Tpl. Mrs Rekiya A. Fache – 1st Vice National Chairman
  3. Tpl. Dr. Veronica Okoye – 2nd Vice National Chairman
  4. Tpl. Gift Nwankwo – National Secretary
  5. Tpl. Mairo Danladi – Asst. National Secretary
  6. Tpl. Rachel Akintunde – National PRS
  7. Tpl. Olayiwola Olarinola Ibukunoluwa – National Financial Secretary
  8. Tpl. Iyabo Olufesobi – co-opted Book Keeper

AIM

Without prejudice to the aim and objectives of NITP, the followings are the aim and objectives of the Association:

OBJECTIVES

  1. Promote, preserve and protect the interest of women in Town Planning.
  2. Create and sustain public awareness on the role of the women in Town Planning.
  3. Develop, maintain and enhance partnerships with Commonwealth Association Planners (CAP), United Nations (UN) Women Member Organization, Women in Cities International, Women Transforming Cities and other Organization pursuing similar gender related objectives in the Built Environment through Nigerian Institute of Town Planners.
  4. Strengthen the voice and leadership of women through continuous advocacy in sustainable human settlement and ensuring that gender equality issues remain high on the National agenda in the built environment.
  5. Initiate, organize, promote and enter into any enterprise deemed beneficial to the Association as may be approved by NITP
  6. Encourage young girls and women to acquire education, training and pursue a career in the profession.
  7. Carry out any activity consistent with the aim and objectives of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners

AWTPN WORK PLAN FOR 2021-2023

The Executive of the National Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria (AWTPN) agreed and adopted CREATIVES Agenda as road map towards achieving the set strategic objectives of the Association  as follows:

C- Collaboration with Stakeholders

R- Roll Out 3years Strategic Work Plan for the Association;

E- Education Advancement and Capacity Building;

A- Awareness Campaign;

T- Technology Advancement in Database for the Association;

I- Inclusiveness and Innovation in Planning Activities;

V- Vulnerability Survey of Members of the Association;

E- Ethical Conducts with Professionalism, Accountability, Integrity and Transparency in the Operations of the Association;

S- Sustainable Mentorship Programme.
